About River’s Bend Trout–Sebec

Our Mission

TF-EMDR therapist giving fly fishing instruction.
River’s Bend Trout–Sebec provides therapeutic outdoor programs tailored to the unique needs of veterans, active-duty military, first responders, educators, caregivers, and their families through transformative outdoor experiences that promote self-empowerment, healing, resilience, and connection.
Through the art of fly fishing, participants can heal in a peaceful, supportive environment. Our programs focus on emotional recovery and stress relief, promoting healing through nature’s calming presence. By offering an inclusive space, we aim to guide individuals on their journey to better mental well-being, using the transformative power of the great outdoors. We provide inclusive, adaptive adventures that support physical and emotional well-being, strengthen family bonds, and honor the service and sacrifices of our nation’s heroes.

Our Story

Our mission was born out of a deep commitment to serving those who have selflessly served others. Founded in Sebec, Maine, River’s Bend Trout–Sebec (RBT-S) is a registered 501(c)(3) U.S. nonprofit organization created to provide a unique space where veterans, active-duty military, first responders, educators, caregivers, and their families can experience healing through nature. What began as a simple vision—to offer a sanctuary for peace, recovery, and camaraderie—has grown into a mission-driven organization rooted in the belief that the natural world can restore both the mind and spirit. Based in Maine, River’s Bend Trout–Sebec serves participants through outdoor programs and experiences in the Sebec and Dover-Foxcroft area. Our founder, RJ Horwitz, is an avid fly fisher whose personal journey reflects both service and healing. He recognized the powerful impact nature can have on mental and emotional well-being. Through therapeutic outdoor programs—including mindfulness practices, fly fishing and nature-based activities—RBT-S fosters belonging, resilience, and connection. Participants are given opportunities not only to heal individually but also to grow together and strengthen their family connections. River’s Bend Trout–Sebec continues to expand its reach and deepen its impact. Every step forward stands as a testament to the strength, courage, and renewal of those we serve. We remain dedicated to creating a peaceful, supportive environment that nurtures the body, mind, and soul.
